Complement system which is a part of natural inherited immune system plays a protective role to slow retinal degeneration in an inherited eye disease named retinitis pigmentosa in a mouse model, according to the research at the National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health, which got published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

This surprising discovery contradicts previous studies of other eye diseases suggesting that the complement system worsens retinal degeneration.
